AmeriCorps VISTA and United Way formed a partnership to help make the community a better place. VISTA members serve in a United Way office in locations around the nation, making a year long, full-time commitment to serve their site. They are passionate and committed to their mission to bring individuals and communities out of poverty. They focus their efforts to build the organizational, administrative, and financial capacity of organizations that fight illiteracy, improve health services, foster economic development, and otherwise assist low-income communities. VISTAs develop programs to meet a need, write grants, and recruit and train volunteers.
Some specific examples of what a United Way VISTA does are: obtain grant funding for transitional housing dedicated to helping the homeless turn their lives around, epand programs to help low-income families have access to after school childcare, recruit mentors for children in the foster care system, and or organize nutrition programs for the food insecure.
At UWFK, VISTAs are involved in strengthening partner agency reporting systems, expanding community knowledge and support about UWFK's work, and developing technological systems to enhance organizational effectiveness. Recently, UWFK was granted funding for a second year VISTA who will be working on expanding daycare and childcare programs throughout the Keys.
