The City of Marathon launched its first ever United Way campaign, with employees donating nearly $6,000.00.

“We want to thank all the participants and sponsors for helping making our community a better place and funding our work to support strong, working families,” Smith said, “All funds raised in the Keys stay in the Keys.”

City Manager Roger Hernstadt encouraged employees to give through paycheck deduction or to donate unused leave time.

A change in policy empowering employees to donate unused time to the United Way was also instituted for the first time this year in the Monroe County Sheriff’s office. The campaign at the Sheriff’s office was up 748% from last year, primarily thanks to a handful of employees donating their unused vacation time.

City of Marathon employees supporting the 2012 United Way campaign include Tiffany Buwalda, Sean Cannon, Patti Childress, Diane Clavier, George Garrett, Zully Hemeyer, Roger Hernstadt, John Johnson, Jenny Meany, Diana Naylor, Jimmy Schmidt, Carlos Solis, and Lanny Woodbury.

Monroe County Sheriff’s employees supporting the 2012 United Way campaign: Timothy Age, Jonathan Crane, Michael Grattan, Amy Heavilin, Lee Ann Holroyd, Derrick Lopez, James Norman, Cynthia Peryam, Robert Peryam, Gene Thompson, Lazaro Valdes, Brenda Winegarden, and Johnnie Yongue.

To learn more about the work of the United Way of the Florida Keys, you can attend a brief presentation being offered as part of the service at Burton Memorial United Methodist Church in Tavernier on January 13, at either the 8:30 a.m. or 10:30 a.m. service. “Anyone who would like to arrange for a United Way presentation where they work,” Smith said, “or to donate directly, can also contact our office at 735-1929.”
